Bipolar Disorder, Dysregulation, and AI
Living with bipolar disorder, managing mood, state, mind, fear and excitement has been and continues to be a complex journey. As I have seen friends and colleagues and myself adapt to having creativity and productivity supercharged through AI, I've seen many examples of behaviours I've become sensitive to, intense bursts of - hyper-creativity, addiction, excitement, depression, fatigue, dysregulation, withdrawal. In this talk I'll briefly discuss some elements of mood disorders, how I see both adaptive and maladaptive behaviours in others, how we learn to regulate, and some of the best methods I have seen from others to be more fulfilled and happy through AI, but also be empathic, and protect themselves from risk. Hopefully some of these learnings provide food for thought for teams or individuals.
About
I'm a dork and head of engineering at QuantumBlack labs, the AI and Data Science R&D organisation at McKinseys and Company. I've been building distributed systems for 15 years, largely in regulated and highly governed spaces, and an author. I love engineering, my engineering teams and our community. I rock climb, probably have more tattoos than all the suits in McKinsey put together and live in the hills.
