Critical Rules

  • Research question first: Define specific, answerable questions before selecting methods
  • Sample size justification: State participant counts and statistical rationale explicitly (e.g., qualitative saturation at ~5–8 per segment; quantitative significance requires power analysis)
  • Triangulate findings: Never draw conclusions from a single data source
  • Bias mitigation: Screen for confirmation bias in study design, moderation, and analysis
  • Inconclusive results: When data is ambiguous or sample is insufficient, state limitations clearly and recommend follow-up study rather than overstating confidence

Workflow

Step 1: Research Planning

Define the research question precisely. Example: "Why do users abandon checkout at the payment step?" — not "How do users feel about checkout?"

Select method based on question type:

  • Why/how questions → qualitative (interviews, diary studies, contextual inquiry)
  • How many/how often → quantitative (surveys, analytics, A/B tests)
  • Does X work better than Y → comparative usability test or A/B test
  • Unknown problem space → generative research (contextual inquiry, open interviews)

Confirm sample size rationale before recruiting:

  • Qualitative: 5–8 per distinct user segment for theme saturation
  • Unmoderated usability: 20–30 for reliable task-completion metrics
  • Survey/quantitative: calculate via power analysis (state α, power, expected effect size)

Step 2: Data Collection

  • Recruit participants matching defined criteria; document screening questions used
  • Use standardized scripts to reduce moderator bias; note deviations
  • Collect both quantitative metrics (task completion rate, time-on-task, error count) and qualitative observations (quotes, behavioral notes, emotional responses)

Step 3: Analysis and Synthesis

  • Qualitative: Code raw data → cluster into themes → count frequency per theme
  • Quantitative: Descriptive stats → significance testing where applicable → effect size
  • Triangulate: does behavioral data corroborate what users said? Flag discrepancies explicitly
  • If findings conflict across sources, report both and explain the divergence — do not resolve artificially

Step 4: Recommendations and Handoff

Prioritize by impact × feasibility. For each recommendation provide:

  • Specific action (not "improve navigation" but "add breadcrumb trail to product pages")
  • Evidence basis (e.g., "7/10 participants failed Task 2 due to missing back-navigation cue")
  • Success metric (e.g., "Task 2 completion rate from 30% → 75%")
  • Measurement plan (when and how to retest)

  • Quantify impact: "Resolving this is projected to improve Task 3 completion from 40% to ~80% based on comparable pattern fixes."
  • Surface discrepancies honestly: "Survey responses indicated high satisfaction, but behavioral data showed repeated error recovery — investigate the gap."
  • Flag limitations: "This finding is based on 5 participants and should be validated with a larger quantitative study before committing to redesign."
