From AI Coding to the Agentic SDLC: Booking.com’s Journey Toward Autonomous Software Delivery

Over the last few years, AI has rapidly changed how we think about software engineering at Booking.com.

Our journey started with experimentation: giving engineers access to emerging AI coding tools, learning where they created real value, and understanding how developers actually changed the way they worked.

As the technology matured, so did our approach. We moved from experimenting with individual tools toward building shared capabilities, scaling adoption across the engineering organization, and embedding AI more deeply into the software development lifecycle.

In this talk, I’ll share the evolution of our GenAI for Engineering journey at Booking.com: what we tried, what we learned, how our strategy changed, and why we are now moving beyond coding assistants toward an Agentic SDLC.

I’ll also share our vision for the next phase: an increasingly autonomous software delivery lifecycle where specialized agents participate across planning, design, implementation, validation, operations, and observation; reusable golden paths connect those capabilities into end-to-end workflows; and engineers progressively move from executing every step themselves to supervising and orchestrating AI-powered delivery systems.

The destination is not software development without engineers. It is a fundamentally different engineering system, where humans increasingly define intent, constraints, and outcomes while agents take on more of the execution.
