While you are presenting, a parallel conversation is happening on laptops, tablets, and phones throughout the room. Attendees are live-tweeting your talk, posting reactions in conference Slack channels, texting colleagues, and commenting on real-time event apps. This is the backchannel — a second layer of communication that runs alongside your presentation, sometimes supporting it and sometimes undermining it.
The backchannel is a double-edged sword. On the positive side, attendees sharing your key points on social media extend your reach far beyond the room. A well-received talk can generate hundreds of tweets, blog posts, and shares that amplify your message to thousands. Conference organizers often encourage this behavior because it builds buzz.
