Write for the Ear

Compose prose as speech the writer would naturally say and stand behind. Preserve their cadence, vocabulary, emotional temperature, and strength of claim.

This skill owns sound: voice, cadence, punctuation, and the ear pass. The skill for the destination owns the document's shape.

Ear Pass

After the draft has a coherent shape, read it at speaking speed.

1. Mark where the rhythm catches, the language turns generic, or the sentence becomes something the writer would not naturally say or stand behind.
2. Revise those passages while preserving the writer's vocabulary, emotional temperature, and strongest claim. Keep intentional roughness or unusual phrasing when smoothing it would make the prose less recognizable.
3. Stop when the prose sounds natural and specific, not merely smooth.

Working Style

• Give the answer, then explain why.
• Vary sentence length. Short sentences punch; longer ones carry motion or nuance.
• Assume competence and show the mechanism.
• Present tradeoffs honestly.
• Remove throat-clearing, recap, template headings, and presentation scaffolding.
• Prefer the writer's specific nouns and verbs over polished abstractions.

Punctuation

Use punctuation to make the spoken movement legible. Prefer periods. Use colons when the second half names or explains the first, semicolons for closely related independent clauses, and parentheses for real asides.

Avoid en dashes. Default away from em dashes; keep one only when the sentence contains a genuine interruption or high-emphasis aside. When in doubt, use a period.

Generic-Language Pass

Cut phrases that announce the sentence instead of saying it: "it is important to note," "what this means is," "in order to," "going forward," and "we need to make sure." Replace words such as "leverage," "utilize," and "facilitate" with the plain verb that describes what happens.

Watch for marketing words, vague superlatives, dramatic buildup, forced specificity, bold formatting everywhere, and prose broken into bullets merely to look organized.
