research

Research an engineering question well enough to support a decision: check a claim against primary sources, compare technologies or approaches, test whether an approach will work or scale, or find why something performs badly, using the repository, current documentation and small, reproducible experiments. Ends with a recommendation that names its evidence, tradeoffs and remaining uncertainty, which may be to keep what exists. Use it whenever the user asks whether to adopt, replace, upgrade or remove a dependency, technology or design, which option to choose, whether a switch is safe, or whether an approach will work or scale, even if they never say research, and whenever they ask to research, compare, evaluate or prototype. Not for quick lookups that one source answers, or for carrying out a change already decided.

Reviews the quality of instructions and guidance provided to agents. Good implementation is clear, handles edge cases, and produces reliable results.

A well-sequenced, genuinely actionable methodology skill with explicit validation gates and feedback loops, written for an intelligent reader without padding. The main improvements available are trimming a few judgment restatements and moving template/checklist detail into reference files to reduce the always-loaded body.

DimensionReasoningScore

Conciseness

The body is dense, judgment-carrying instruction with no explanations of concepts Claude already knows, but a few passages restate judgment Claude largely has ("Compare like with like", "a plausible explanation isn't a root cause") and the ~14KB always-loaded body is heavy for a skill. This fits anchor 4 (efficient with minor instances that could be trimmed) better than the every-token-earns-its-place bar of anchor 5.

4 / 5

Actionability

Concrete, executable guidance throughout: copy-paste commands for the scratchpad ("mkdir -p -m 700 <folder>", "[ -d <folder> ] && [ ! -L <folder> ] && [ -O <folder> ] && chmod 700 <folder>", "printenv TMPDIR"), "npm install --ignore-scripts", a seven-section decision-brief template, an evidence-label taxonomy, and named handoff commands. It stops short of anchor 5 only because there is no worked example (e.g., a sample experiment plan or a filled-in findings row), leaving minor gaps.

4 / 5

Workflow Clarity

The numbered sections 1–10 form an explicit sequence (frame → method → search → weigh → compare → experiment → read results → disprove → stop → brief) with validation checkpoints: pre-registered "success, failure or inconclusive" criteria before any experiment, a hard gate on the scratchpad check ("if the check fails, stop and tell the user"), stopping criteria in section 9, and feedback loops ("If the method has to change, say why and treat it as a new experiment"). This matches the anchor for clear sequence with explicit validation and error-recovery loops.

5 / 5

Progressive Disclosure

Sections are well-organized and clearly headed, but the skill is ~110 body lines with no bundle files, and self-contained content such as the brief template, the experiment checklist, and the scratchpad mechanics could be split into one-level-deep reference files to slim the loaded body. That is good structure with minor organization gaps (anchor 4); the under-50-line exception for a 5 does not apply.

Description

96%Weight 40%Scale 1-5

Based on the skill's description, can an agent find and select it at the right time? Clear, specific descriptions lead to better discovery.

A strong description that states concrete capabilities, methods, and deliverable, with explicit and natural trigger phrasing plus negative scope. Its only weakness is modest overlap risk with diagnosis/review skills via the performance-investigation and evaluation triggers.

DimensionReasoningScore

Specificity

The description lists multiple concrete actions — "check a claim against primary sources", "compare technologies or approaches", "test whether an approach will work or scale", "find why something performs badly" — along with the methods ("the repository, current documentation and small, reproducible experiments") and the output shape ("a recommendation that names its evidence, tradeoffs and remaining uncertainty"). This matches the anchor for comprehensive coverage of specific concrete actions; the anchor below (4) would require minor gaps in coverage, which are not present.

5 / 5

Completeness

Both halves are explicit: what it does (research an engineering question to support a decision, with named methods and deliverable) and when to use it ("Use it whenever the user asks whether to adopt, replace, upgrade or remove…"), plus an explicit negative scope ("Not for quick lookups that one source answers, or for carrying out a change already decided"). This clearly matches the anchor requiring both what and when with concrete trigger phrases, not the anchor-4 case where 'when' could be more explicit.

5 / 5

Trigger Term Quality

It covers natural user phrasings comprehensively: "whether to adopt, replace, upgrade or remove a dependency, technology or design", "which option to choose", "whether a switch is safe", "whether an approach will work or scale", plus the verbs "research, compare, evaluate or prototype" and the note that it applies "even if they never say research". This is anchor-5 coverage with synonyms and phrasing variations rather than the partial coverage of anchor 4.

5 / 5

Distinctiveness Conflict Risk

The decision-research niche is clear and the explicit exclusions (not for quick lookups, not for executing an already-decided change) reduce conflict, but triggers like "find why something performs badly" and "evaluate" overlap with debugging and code-review skills. That is minor overlap risk with closely related skills (anchor 4) rather than the minimal conflict risk required for anchor 5.
