Ancient Chinese Calendar Determination

A systematic method for establishing accurate agricultural calendars through celestial observation at four cardinal directions.

Overview

This procedure divides responsibilities among four officials stationed at different locations to observe celestial bodies and determine the four seasons for agricultural purposes.

Steps

  1. Appoint Four Officials

    • Xi Zhong (羲仲) to the East (Yi Valley/旸谷)
    • Xi Shu (羲叔) to the South (Nan Jiao)
    • He Zhong (和仲) to the West (Mei Valley/昧谷)
    • He Shu (和叔) to the North (You Du)
  2. Spring Equinox Determination (East)

    • Observe the sunrise respectfully
    • Note when day and night are equal length
    • Identify the star "Niao" (Bird) at mid-heaven
    • Mark as middle of spring
    • Observe: people scatter to work, birds and beasts breed
  3. Summer Solstice Determination (South)

    • Observe the longest day of the year
    • Identify the star "Huo" (Fire) at mid-heaven
    • Mark as middle of summer
    • Observe: people wear less clothing, animals shed fur
  4. Autumn Equinox Determination (West)

    • Observe the sunset respectfully
    • Note when night and day are equal length
    • Identify the star "Xu" (Void) at mid-heaven
    • Mark as middle of autumn
    • Observe: people return to settlements, animals grow new fur
  5. Winter Solstice Determination (North)

    • Observe the shortest day of the year
    • Identify the star "Mao" (Pleiades) at mid-heaven
    • Mark as middle of winter
    • Observe: people stay indoors, animals grow thick fur
  6. Calendar Adjustment

    • Calculate year as 366 days
    • Use leap months (闰月) to correct the four seasons
    • Verify all officials follow the established times

Expected Outcomes

  • Accurate agricultural calendar for farming activities
  • Coordinated seasonal activities across the realm
  • Successful harvest timing and resource management

Validation

  • Verify that each cardinal station identifies the correct mid-heaven star (Niao, Huo, Xu, Mao) for its respective season
  • Confirm leap month (闰月) adjustments keep the calendar aligned with observed equinoxes and solstices
  • Check that all four officials report consistent day-length measurements at equinox points
