Crisis Negotiation and Surrender Strategy

Overview

A diplomatic procedure for negotiating survival when militarily defeated, based on Goujian of Yue's approach when surrounded at Kuaiji.

Steps

  1. Accept the situation - Acknowledge defeat and the need for negotiation
  2. Offer humble submission - Express willingness to become a servant/vassal; offer spouse as servant
  3. Send skilled negotiator - Deploy a capable diplomat (like Zhong) to make the approach
  4. Identify corruptible enemy officials - Find those who can be influenced by gifts (like Tai Zai Pi)
  5. Bribe key intermediaries - Present beautiful women and treasures to corrupt officials
  6. Make credible threat - If initial offer rejected, threaten to: kill family, burn treasures, and fight to death with remaining forces
  7. Leverage intermediaries - Have bribed officials advocate for acceptance of surrender

Decision Points

  • If direct surrender rejected, immediately pivot to bribery channel
  • If bribery succeeds, accept vassal status temporarily

Expected Outcomes

  • Survival of core leadership
  • Opportunity for future recovery
  • Time to rebuild strength

Verification

  1. Confirm that direct surrender was attempted before resorting to bribery channels.
  2. Validate that corruptible enemy officials have been identified and that gifts (women, treasures) were delivered through the correct intermediaries.
  3. Check that a credible mutual-destruction threat is prepared as fallback if both surrender and bribery channels fail.
