Five Difficulties Assessment Framework

A framework from ancient Chinese statecraft for evaluating whether someone can successfully take over a state.

Overview

This analytical method identifies five critical deficiencies that doom political takeovers. A contender failing any condition is unlikely to succeed.

The Five Difficulties

1. 有宠无人 - Have favor but no supporters

   • Being personally favored but lacking capable people to help
   • No network of loyal, competent followers

2. 有人无主 - Have supporters but no legitimate claim

   • Having capable helpers but no rightful authority or lineage
   • Missing the mandate or recognition to lead

3. 有主无谋 - Have legitimacy but no strategy

   • Possessing rightful claim but lacking tactical wisdom
   • No plan for execution

4. 有谋而无民 - Have strategy but no popular support

   • Having plans but no connection to the common people
   • Long exile or disconnection from the populace

5. 有民而无德 - Have support but no virtue

   • Having followers but lacking moral standing
   • No record of benevolence or past good deeds

Decision Rule

If a contender fails on multiple difficulties, success is nearly impossible. Compare against successful examples (like Duke Huan of Qi or Duke Wen of Jin) who had all five elements aligned.

Expected Outcome

Accurate prediction of political success or failure based on structural conditions.

Verification

1. Confirm that the contender has been assessed against all five difficulties, not just a subset.
2. Validate findings by comparing the contender's profile against successful historical examples (Duke Huan of Qi, Duke Wen of Jin) who had all five elements aligned.
3. Check whether failure on multiple difficulties renders the bid structurally impossible, regardless of individual strengths.
