Han Xin's Back-to-Water Battle Formation

Overview

A military tactic where troops are positioned with no retreat option, forcing them to fight desperately. Used by Han Xin at the Battle of Jingxing (井陉之战).

Prerequisites

  • Inferior force facing superior enemy
  • Need to maximize troop motivation
  • Enemy expects conventional deployment

Steps

  1. Pre-battle Intelligence

    • Send scouts to confirm enemy won't use certain strategies
    • Identify terrain with water barrier behind
  2. Night Preparation

    • Select 2,000 light cavalry
    • Give each rider a red flag
    • Instruct them to hide on hillsides watching the enemy camp
  3. Deploy Main Force

    • Position 10,000 troops with backs to the river
    • This appears as a tactical error to the enemy
    • Enemy will mock and underestimate your forces
  4. Execute Deception

    • Display main banners and advance
    • Engage briefly, then feign defeat
    • Abandon banners and drums, retreat to riverside position
  5. Signal Hidden Cavalry

    • When enemy empties camp to pursue
    • Cavalry rushes in to capture enemy camp
    • Replace enemy flags with your red flags
  6. Final Assault

    • Troops at riverside fight desperately (no retreat possible)
    • Enemy returns to find camp captured
    • Panic ensues, enemy collapses

Key Principle

"Place troops in death ground and they will live; place them in survival ground and they will perish" (陷之死地而后生)

Expected Outcome

  • Troops fight with maximum determination
  • Enemy caught in pincer movement
  • Victory despite numerical inferiority

Verification

  1. Confirm that pre-battle intelligence has verified the enemy will not employ strategies that counter the back-to-water formation.
  2. Validate that hidden cavalry (with red flags) is positioned and briefed before the main force deploys at the riverside.
  3. Ensure the feigned defeat is convincing enough to draw the enemy out of their camp before the cavalry strikes.
