Three-Army Military Organization

A command structure for organizing military forces with clear hierarchy and specialized roles.

Overview

Divide forces into three armies (三军) with distinct command structures and responsibilities.

Command Structure

Central Army (中军)

  • Commander: Most experienced general (将中军)
  • Deputy: Second-in-command (佐之)
  • Role: Main force, center of battle formation

Upper Army (上军)

  • Commander: Senior noble or experienced officer
  • Deputy: Supporting commander
  • Role: Flank support, reserve force

Lower Army (下军)

  • Commander: Capable officer
  • Deputy: Supporting commander
  • Role: Vanguard or rear guard as needed

Staff Positions

  • Chariot Driver (御戎): Drives commander's chariot
  • Right Guard (右): Armed protector on chariot

Implementation Steps

  1. Assess total available forces
  2. Divide into three approximately equal groups
  3. Appoint commanders based on merit and experience
  4. Assign deputies to each commander
  5. Designate support staff for each command
  6. Establish communication protocols between armies
  7. Define rules of engagement and coordination

Decision Points

  • If forces are insufficient, reduce to two armies
  • If facing multiple fronts, create additional specialized units (三行 - three columns)

Expected Outcome

Organized military with clear chain of command and coordinated response capability.

Verification

  1. Confirm that commanders are appointed based on merit and experience rather than solely on noble rank.
  2. Validate that each army has both a commander and deputy assigned with clear roles.
  3. Check that communication protocols between the three armies have been established and tested before deployment.
