A literary technique using invented characters in conversation to present multiple perspectives and lead readers to a desired conclusion without direct argument.

Structure

1. Create Representative Characters

   • Design characters representing different viewpoints
   • Example from "Zixu Fu":
     • Zixu (子虚) - "Mr. Empty/Void" - represents Chu perspective
     • Wuyou Xiansheng (乌有先生) - "Mr. Nonexistent" - represents Qi perspective
     • Wushigong (无是公) - "Mr. Nothingness" - represents the imperial/neutral perspective

2. Establish the Setting

   • Create a plausible context for the conversation
   • Often a gathering or meeting after an event

3. Present Competing Views

   • Let each character present their position
   • Include exaggeration and pride in each view
   • Build tension between perspectives

4. Introduce the Resolving Voice

   • Have the most authoritative character deliver the conclusion
   • This character should transcend the earlier biases
   • Present the "correct" view as obvious and natural

5. End with Moral Instruction

   • Conclude with the lesson to be learned
   • Often framed as returning to proper values (e.g., frugality, propriety)
