Overview

Compare the target's situation to historical examples of those who refused orders and suffered consequences.

Steps

1. Establish Relative Authority

   • Ask: "How does your achievement compare to [famous predecessor]?"
   • Get acknowledgment that target is less accomplished

2. Compare Patrons

   • Ask: "How does current patron's authority compare to previous era?"
   • Establish that current patron has equal or greater power

3. Cite Consequence Example

   • Reference someone who refused similar orders
   • Describe their fate clearly (exile, death)

4. Draw Implicit Conclusion

   • State: "I don't know where you will die"
   • Let target reach their own conclusion

5. Allow Face-Saving Exit

   • Let target agree through a subordinate
   • "I will go because of this child's words"

Expected Outcomes

• Target agrees to take action
• Relationship preserved
• No direct confrontation required

Validation

1. Confirm the historical analogy is accurate and the target recognizes the referenced predecessor's fate — an obscure or irrelevant example fails to create the intended pressure
2. Verify a face-saving exit was provided so the target can agree without appearing coerced ("I will go because of this child's words")
3. Check that the implied consequence was left implicit — making the threat explicit transforms persuasion into coercion and damages the relationship
