Overview

A method for handling those who wronged you when you were powerless, once you regain authority and position.

Steps

  1. Allow opportunity for flight: If the wrongdoer flees, do not immediately pursue with violence
  2. Issue a measured threat: Send word that failure to appear will result in severe consequences (to family/clan)
  3. Accept sincere apology: When the person presents themselves in contrition (e.g., bare-backed), accept it
  4. Reference the past grievance lightly: Use humor or light reference to the past insult
  5. Demonstrate magnanimity: Treat the person well going forward

Key Principles

  • "死灰独不复然乎" (Can dead ashes not burn again?) - Acknowledge that fortunes change
  • Those who insult the powerless may be valuable when circumstances reverse
  • Mercy creates loyal supporters; vengeance creates enemies

Decision Points

  • If the person refuses to appear after summons → enforce consequences
  • If the person shows genuine remorse → forgive and use their skills

Expected Outcomes

  • Reputation for generosity and fairness spreads
  • Former adversaries become loyal supporters
  • Others are encouraged to serve faithfully, knowing mercy is possible

Verification

  • Confirm the former adversary has shown genuine remorse (not mere performance) before granting forgiveness
  • Validate that the reconciliation is publicly visible enough to build the intended reputation for magnanimity
  • Check that the reconciled party is given meaningful responsibilities to cement their new loyalty
