Self-Interest Persuasion Framework

A method for persuading influential figures by identifying their vulnerabilities and presenting solutions that serve mutual benefit.

Overview

This technique, demonstrated in persuading Lady Huayang to adopt Prince Zichu, focuses on aligning your proposal with the target's deepest concerns about their future security and status.

Steps

1. Analyze the Target's Position

  • What is their current source of power?
  • What vulnerabilities threaten that power?
  • What future scenarios could leave them powerless?

2. Identify the Core Vulnerability

Common vulnerabilities:

  • Aging and declining influence
  • Lack of heirs or successors
  • Dependence on another's favor
  • Competitors for position

3. Formulate the Warning

Present the vulnerability as inevitable:

  • "Those who serve through beauty lose favor when beauty fades"
  • "Without preparation, you will have no advocate when power shifts"

4. Present the Solution

  • Identify a candidate who can be elevated
  • Explain why they are suitable
  • Show how their elevation serves the target
  • Demonstrate that they are already inclined to gratitude

5. Create Urgency

  • "Act while you still have influence"
  • "After decline begins, even words will be impossible"
  • Frame the present as the optimal moment

6. Show Mutual Benefit

  • Target gains: permanent security, continued influence after death of current patron
  • Candidate gains: position and status
  • Persuader gains: relationship with both parties

Key Phrases

  • "This is what is called one word for ten thousand generations of benefit"
  • "If you do not plant roots during prosperity, what will happen when...?"
  • "This will ensure lifelong favor"

Decision Points

  • If target seems unconcerned: emphasize the inevitability of decline
  • If target worries about feasibility: provide concrete implementation steps
  • If target hesitates: introduce time pressure

Expected Outcomes

  • Target actively advocates for your proposed candidate
  • Formal commitment is secured
  • Long-term alliance is established

Verification

  1. Confirm that the target's core vulnerability has been identified and the warning has been framed as inevitable rather than speculative.
  2. Validate that the proposed solution clearly demonstrates mutual benefit for all parties (target, candidate, persuader).
  3. Ensure urgency has been created through the framing of the present as the optimal moment for action, not through false pressure.
