Tui'en (推恩) Feudal Weakening Strategy

Overview

A political strategy to gradually weaken feudal lords by dividing their territories among all heirs rather than consolidating power with a single successor.

Steps

1. Identify the Target Structure

   • Assess feudal lords with large territories and multiple sons
   • Note that only the primary heir traditionally inherits all land

2. Implement the Decree

   • Issue an imperial order allowing lords to divide territories among ALL sons
   • Frame it as an act of benevolence (推恩 - extending grace)
   • Each son receives a portion as a marquisate

3. Execute the Division

   • Lords must partition their lands
   • Create new smaller administrative units for each heir

4. Monitor Results

   • Territories become progressively smaller with each generation
   • No direct confrontation or forced confiscation needed
   • Formerly powerful states fragment into minor holdings
