The Xiongnu maintained a structured annual calendar of gatherings for religious observance, governance, and resource assessment.

Annual Schedule

First Month (正月)

  • Event: Small gathering at Shanyu's court (单于庭)
  • Purpose: Sacrificial ceremonies (祠)
  • Participants: Tribal leaders and nobles

Fifth Month (五月)

  • Event: Grand assembly at Longcheng (茏城)
  • Purpose: Worship ancestors, heaven, earth, and spirits (祭其先、天地、鬼神)
  • Scale: Major ceremonial gathering

Autumn (秋)

  • Event: Grand assembly at Dailin (蹛林)
  • Purpose: Census and resource assessment (课校人畜计)

Daily Rituals

  • Morning: Shanyu exits camp and bows to the rising sun
  • Evening: Bows to the moon

  • Seating: Elders on the left, facing north
