Yellow Bell (黄钟) Calculation Method

This method establishes the fundamental pitch standard and derives all twelve pitch pipes from it.

Overview

Yellow Bell (黄钟) serves as the fundamental pitch from which all other pitches are derived through mathematical calculation.

Base Calculation

  1. Establish the base unit

    • Set 1 as the starting point (子一分)
    • Use powers of 3 as the divisor
  2. Calculate successive pitches

    • 丑: 2/3 of base
    • 寅: 8/9 of base
    • 卯: 16/27 of base
    • 辰: 64/81 of base
    • Continue through all twelve pitches

Mathematical Formula

置一而九三之以为法
实如法,得长一寸
凡得九寸,命曰"黄钟之宫"
  • Set 1, multiply by 3 nine times (3^9 = 19683) as divisor
  • The result is 1 寸
  • Total: 9 寸 = Yellow Bell standard

Key Principles

  • 音始於宫,穷於角
  • 数始於一,终於十,成於三
  • 气始於冬至,周而复生

Application

Use this standard to:

  • Calibrate musical instruments
  • Establish weights and measures
  • Determine seasonal timing

Validation

  1. Confirm the base calculation produces 3^9 = 19683 as the divisor and 9 寸 as the Yellow Bell standard
  2. Verify each successive pitch is correctly derived using powers of 3 from the base unit
  3. Check that the derived standard is consistent across its three application domains: musical tuning, weights/measures, and seasonal timing
