Zhou Yi Divination Interpretation

Overview

This method describes the interpretation of Zhou Yi (I Ching) hexagrams for divination, as demonstrated in the case of Chen Li Gong divining about his son.

Procedure

Step 1: Perform the Divination

  • Engage a trained diviner (太史)
  • Conduct the milfoil stalk divination
  • Record the resulting hexagram and any changing lines

Step 2: Identify the Hexagram Transformation

  • Note the original hexagram (本卦)
  • Note the transformed hexagram (之卦)
  • Example: 观之否 (Guan changing to Pi)

Step 3: Analyze the Hexagram Statement

  • Read the relevant line texts
  • Example: "观国之光,利用宾于王" (Observing the glory of the state, beneficial to serve as guest to the king)

Step 4: Apply Interpretive Framework

Location of Fulfillment:

  • Will it manifest here (此国)?
  • Or in another state (异国)?

Timing of Fulfillment:

  • In this person's lifetime (此身)?
  • Or in descendants (子孙)?

Clan Affiliation:

  • Identify the ruling clan of the future state
  • Example: 姜姓 (Jiang clan) = descendants of Tai Yue

Step 5: Apply the Principle of Balance

  • "物莫能两大" (Things cannot both be great)
  • If one state rises, another must decline
  • The decline of the original state may enable the rise of descendants elsewhere

Example Interpretation

For Chen Li Gong's son:

  • Hexagram: Guan changing to Pi
  • Meaning: Will serve in royal court, but not in Chen
  • Timing: Will manifest in descendants
  • Location: A Jiang-ruled state (later fulfilled in Qi)

Expected Outcomes

  • Understanding of potential future trajectories
  • Guidance for strategic decisions
  • Insight into generational patterns

Verification

  1. Confirm that both the original hexagram (本卦) and the transformed hexagram (之卦) have been correctly identified and recorded.
  2. Validate that the interpretive framework addresses both location (此国 vs 异国) and timing (此身 vs 子孙) of fulfillment.
  3. Check that the principle of balance (物莫能两大) has been applied to assess reciprocal rise and decline dynamics.
