Defensive Camp Circle Formation

Overview

Procedure for creating a defensive position using armored wagons (武刚车) arranged in a circle, used by Wei Qing against Xiongnu forces.

Steps

  1. Assess Situation

    • Enemy forces spotted and arrayed for battle
    • Open terrain with no natural defensive positions
    • Enemy has numerical or mobility advantage
  2. Deploy Armored Wagons

    • Position 武刚车 in a circular formation
    • Create a mobile fortification
    • Wagons form the perimeter
  3. Position Forces Inside

    • Place infantry and supplies within the circle
    • Cavalry ready to sortie from protected position
  4. Engage from Protected Position

    • Send out cavalry probes (e.g., 5,000 riders)
    • Enemy must attack prepared position
  5. Adapt to Conditions

    • Use weather (dust storms, darkness) to advantage
    • Extend wings to envelop enemy
  6. Pursue When Enemy Breaks

    • When enemy retreats, launch pursuit
    • Continue pursuit through the night if necessary

Expected Outcome

Defensive position neutralizes enemy cavalry advantage, protects forces, and enables counterattack when conditions favor.

Verification

  • Confirm the wagon circle perimeter is complete with no exploitable gaps for enemy cavalry penetration
  • Validate that infantry, supplies, and cavalry sortie forces are correctly positioned within the formation
  • Check that weather and terrain conditions (dust storms, darkness) are being exploited for wing extension and envelopment timing
